Q: “Long time no see” and “Have you had your meal” are two typical sentences of greeting when Chinese people meet each other. Suppose President Hu greeted President Bush in this way, how would Mr. Bush react to it?

Q1: As we all know, different countries have different cultures and customs. Look at the following pictures. In which countries do people greet each other in the way like the people in each picture do?

Q2: Why do people greet each other in different ways in different parts of the world?

1. Do you think it’s important to learn cultural differences between different nations? Why?

2. Have you ever experienced cultural differences in your life?

Go through the passage as quickly as possible and try to find answers to the three questions. Just focus on and identify the information needed to answer these questions.

1.     What’s the style of the text?

2.     How many subjects of cultural differences are mentioned in the text?

3.     What are these subjects?

Fill in a form about different

reactions of people from

different countries in different

situations.

1. Do you know some other

gestures which have different

meanings in different parts of

the world?

2. What else do you know

About the cultural differences

between China and other

countries?

1.     Comparison:

Make comparisons between The Double Seventh Festival in China and Valentine’s Day in western countries and ask students which one they think is more interesting to them.

2.     Discussion:                                                                  Nowadays more and more Chinese young people are crazy about Western festivals like Valentine’s Day and gradually forget about Chinese traditional festivals. What’s your opinion?

Of course all the students will laugh and agree that Mr. Bush will be totally at a loss

Students are asked to describe all the pictures to find out the differences in the ways of greeting..

Students will come to a conclusion that the reason lies in cultural differences

Give students 4 mins to discuss with each other in pairs and share their opinions and experiences

Students will read the text quickly and find out the answers to the three questions.

Students will read the text carefully this time and fill in the blanks in the form.

Give students 10mins to talk about these two questions in groups and then ask two or three groups to tell their opinions to the rest of the class.

Give students 15mins to work in small groups and then present their ideas to all of us.

Cultural Differences
